I recently had the pleasure of staying at the magnificent Estoril Vintage Hotel in beautiful Portugal, and it was like stepping into a storybook. Nestled along the stunning Atlantic Ocean coastline between Estoril and Cascais, this former palace converted into a boutique luxury hotel harkens back to an era when elegance and sophistication ruled the day.
Let me tell you why you should treat yourself, or better yet, how you should let the owners & staff at Estoril Vintage Hotel treat you like royalty.

A Warm Welcome
As I was ushered into the small but grand lobby of the Estoril Vintage Hotel I had to stifle a gasp of awe. The marble floors, decorative oval windows, ornate furnishings, and telltale Portuguese tile art (“Azulejo”) exude a sense of opulence and grace. The warm and welcoming staff, with their impeccable attire and genuine smiles, made me feel like a cherished royal guest from the moment I arrived.
I had arrived early to explore the hotel and surrounding area so, while I waited for my room to be ready, I quickly peeked into the main floor spaces: a lavishly appointed great room, bar, and restaurant that features expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean (along with more impressive Azulejo tile art). And stepping out of the great room onto the terrace and then to the outdoor pool, well, my mind kept repeating, “Is this real?” It’s so beautiful that you might think it’s all a dream.
Luxury Hotel Rooms that Tell Stories
Stepping into my luxury hotel room was like opening the cover of a storybook where the pages are filled with tales of elegance, inspired design, and comfort. The attention to detail was astounding, from the vintage-inspired furniture to the luxurious fabrics that adorned the bed. (Even the extra toilet paper rolls were wrapped in pretty cotton fabric.)
As I gazed out the hotel room window, the breathtaking view of the inviting outdoor swimming pool and glittering ocean in the near distance was the perfect backdrop to complete the story of absolute tranquility.
I also really appreciate when a handwritten note welcomes you. That is so classy. My expectations had already been exceeded and I had really only arrived!
A Culinary Journey
Food is always an important aspect of my travels, and the Estoril Vintage Hotel’s food & beverage options did not disappoint.
I chose a shady spot on the terrace for my lunch, and thoroughly enjoyed a panini with salad and a nicely chilled chardonnay. White-gloved service from the waiter coupled with the view of boats moving in and out of the Cascais marina, and the Santa Marta lighthouse in the distance, made that meal an experience to savour.
The terrace beckoned me for cocktail hour after spending time at the pool and the nearby beach (more on that later). An expertly crafted martini was augmented by complimentary nuts and potato chips.
The hotel’s restaurant, with its classic decor and attentive service, offered a culinary dinner experience like no other. Arriving somewhat unfashionably “early” for dinner (at 8 pm), and alone, the white-gloved serving staff ensured I was made comfortable at a table overlooking the Atlantic and proceeded to take care of me for the next couple of hours. Another nice touch was when one of the owners of the hotel approached to chat and make sure I was happy.
I dined well and slowly, especially savouring each bite of the truffle & wild mushroom risotto that I chose for my main. I don’t particularly have a sweet tooth for desserts, and the cheese tray on the menu seemed too much for one. So I asked if I could have a small selection of local cheeses for dessert, with a glass of port. No problem! My wish was their command and quickly set in front of me was a lovely selection of local cheeses – just the right amount for one.
The entire dinner experience was elevated to the highest heights by the impeccable service, outstanding view and of course the regional food and wine.
Breakfast was included with my stay and, again, exceeded all of my expectations.
When I arrived in the restaurant’s ante-room, I was met with a buffet table laden with Portuguese pastries (arguably the best in the world in my opinion), fresh fruit, more regional cheese and cold cuts. Seated in front of the expansive seaside view again in the restaurant, I also ordered a la carte a delectable eggs benedict dish with thick, crisp bacon. And of course I enjoyed a perfectly-prepared cappuccino.
How to Spend Your Time While at the Estoril Vintage Hotel
A short and lovely walk along the waterfront promenade gives you lots of eye candy and leads you into the heart of Cascais, ‘The Charm of the Atlantic Coast’ according to the beach umbrellas provided by caiscais.pt. The beaches are filled with happy sunbathers and lined by a dizzying array of food & beverage outlets to satisfy all appetites and budgets.
Caiscais itself offers a spectacular range of things to do and places to eat.
I personally recommend you see the Santa Marta lighthouse and enjoy lunch at Galeria House of Wonders (even if you’re not a vegetarian).
Closer to the hotel itself is Praia das Moitas, a public beach that also offers great views, lots of food & beverage outlets, and great options for people watching.
Retreating To The Oasis
After some time exploring the surrounding area, the luxury hotel’s outdoor pool beckoned me with its promise of relaxation and serenity.
Its location offers privacy and views of the spectacular architecture and grounds of the hotel, plus views of the Atlantic Ocean so close by.
The lounging chairs are divine, the heated pool water beckons you to cool off from the hot sunshine, and of course the hotel offers impeccable poolside F&B service… with just the push of a button at each wrought-iron lounge table.
As I lounged poolside, surrounded by lush greenery and the soft melody of water flowing from the sculptured-stone mermaid fountain, I felt completely enveloped in the lap of luxury. It was the perfect place to unwind and recharge like royalty.
While I didn’t have time to partake in any of the other options available at the hotel, note that they do offer spa services, a personal trainer, and hairdressing services.
And if you’re there during inclement weather, grab a book and curl up in any one of the comfy nooks expertly staged for maximum comfort.
Getting There
Portugal is blessed with a fabulous train network. So getting to and from the Estoril Vintage luxury hotel is easy from wherever you are in the country. I departed from Lisbon’s Santos train station and within 45 minutes I had arrived at the Monte Estoril station.
With very little luggage for my 24-hour stay, it was a short 10-minute walk for me from the train station to the hotel. Taxi and Uber drivers wait at the station as well, if you prefer not to walk with luggage.
The hotel itself is exclusive, on private property, and not open to the public. Only registered guests are buzzed in past the formidable privacy gates; you will get access instructions when you register.
And, if you are brave enough to drive in Portugal, the hotel is perched right above a main highway (N6) and has secure parking on-site. Or, the hotel staff can arrange airport transfers for you.
